Since the release of the iPad a few years ago, Apple have really dominated the tablet market all around the world with the iPad and the iPad 2. This is because no other device has been able to compete with apple in regard to features, price and functionality available on the iPad.

Many challengers have come and gone with the most publicised being the HP Touchpad which died a cheap $99 death.

Over the last few months however, there seem to be some more legitimate challengers popping up which may make a bigger dent in Apples dominance.

The first is Amazon’s Kindle Fire. This device has been marketed as an affordable and feature packed alternative and is expected to sell 3.9 million units in the last quarter of 2011.

Apple has currently got 66% of the market and in Australia some of the major carriers have started to release new iPad plans.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus – Can it compete with the Galaxy S2

Today Samsung and Google released their new challenger to the Apple iPhone, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

The new phone is the first to run Google’s new Android 4.0 platform dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, a bit of a mouthful. Android 4.0 has been redesigned by Google and redefined to make it faster, smoother and uniform.

There are a number of new features that are highlights of the new software. The first is the Face unlock feature. This feature allows the owner to unlock the phone simply by looking at the camera. It has a camera detection system that recognises your face and determines if it is the owner before unlocking the phone. It is new technology so it is reported to have some teething issues.

Another new feature is Android Beam. This is a new app which will allow you to share you contacts, websites, maps, apps and other things simply by holding it next to another NFC (near field communication) device.

The state of the Samsung Galaxy S2

Samsung are a huge South Korean Electronics and technology company and have their hands in many consumer electronic devices. Their core business is their television business which produces some of the nicest tvs on the market.

One of the markets which they are making huge waves in at the moment is their handset division. For a long time, this division was quite the under performer producing everyday handsets that did not really get noticed by many people.

This all changed when they produced a device called the Samsung Galaxy S. The iPhone 4S in Australia – The state of play

Apple last week revealed the next iteration of the iPhone, the iPhone 4S. The product is physically identical to the iPhone 4, but contains a faster processor, better camera and new software which includes a digital assistant called Siri.

The iPhone 4S price is reasonable and is free on some plans and not too pricey on others. At this stage only Optus and Vodafone have released their iPhone 4S deals. Luckily for us Australians, Apple has moved us up in their rankings as we are only one of 7 countries to get the phone during its initial release on the 14th of October. Many other countries have to wait at least until the 28th of October. It will be available on 4 carriers – Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Virgin.

The iPhone 4S has been given a new dual-core CPU, which is currently used in the iPad 2, as well as a dual core GPU. The phone has been upgraded with an eight mega-pixel camera. Apart from these features, the iPhones 4S is ultimately the same as the iPhone 4.

The screen with retina display is identical to the iPhone 4. The phone has the same physical design, glass back and thickness. The screen was one area where it was felt the phone could do with an upgrade. There is a lot of competition coming now from Samsung, HTC which sport larger 4.3 inch screens. Next to these phones, the iPhone 4S screen looks a little too small.

For those that have the iPhone 4, there seems to be very little in terms of features that will probably compel you to upgrade to the iPhone 4S. Although the iPhone 4S has improved speed and graphics, it already runs extremely well in these areas and therefore the small improvements in this area will not make much difference to the average consumer.
